Ice Machines for Harbour

Published on November 3, 2017 at 03:04 PM

A harbour in Cornwall was struggling with unreliable ice making equipment which was costing a lot of money annually in running costs and repairs. They wished to keep their existing insulated, unrefrigerated storage, so any new equipment would need to fit in the space available in the roofspace above and also through the existing access hatch.

Wall mounted ice machine for bakery

A bakery in Wales needed a controllable method of cooling their dough and after doing their research decided that a hygienic Ziegra granular flake ice machine would be the way to go.

After consultation a Ziegra ZBE 1.200 was chosen and it was decided to wall mount the unit as they did not need storage and wall mounting would keep valuable floor space free.

Why use ice?

Advantages

Ice as a cooling medium has a few important advantages that make it popular; it has a large cooling effect for a given volume, its hygienic, easy to store, easy to move and cost efficient.

It can easily be placed around a product or mixed into a product for a rapid, yet gentle and controllable cooling effect.

Automatic Dough Cooling

One of the biggest industrial bakeries in Germany, known for its high quality products has just decided to purchase a new automatic ice dosing system for a new line.

The ice dosing solution consists of an AS500 with 10.000kg per day ice production will be installed above two Diosna mixers, mixing 8 batches per hour. The ice dosing will be fully integrated into the automatic process control and the dosing will be co-ordinated with the dosing of other ingredients.

Selecting an ice machine

How much ice per day?

The first question to answer when selecting an ice machine is how much ice will you need per day.

Ziegra have packaged machines from 30kg per day up to 10,000kg and even larger split systems so we will need to narrow this down a bit.

Installation of an ice machine

Once a machine / storage has been selected, it is then time to decide where the machine will be located.

In an ideal world, an ice machine would be located in an area with plenty of ventilation, clean air and with constant air and water tempeartures. In the real world this is not always possible

Ice Machine Hygiene

Where hygiene is an important consideration, eg for food manufacturing applications, it must be considered at every stage.

The picture to the left shows 2 x UBE5.000 RV models feeding an AS500 mini silo.

1. The correct ice machine

When hygiene is important, Ziegra would recommend a machine with a single pass water system. This means that water enters the machine from the mains, travels through the machine in a single path and exits the machine as ice.

New CoolNat Range

Ziegra are pleased to announce that in 2017 all machines from 30kg to 250kg will be upgraded to our CoolNat specification as standard, which uses R290 as the refrigerant.

The graphic on the right shows a ZBE30-10 CoolNat model.

This new specification combines excellent technical performance with a low environmental footprint and improved energy efficiency. As an example, the previous model ZBE30-10 was 0.4kW, but the new CoolNat model is now only 0.3kW.

Ziegra have developed a new style of filter system to be included on all new Ziegra SWE trawler ice machines.

This system features a one piece poly head for the a combination of corrosion resistance, strength and hygiene.

It retains the three stage filtration of the old system it replaces which ensures that the feed water is free from sediment and other solid contaminants down to five microns. The first two stages are pre-filters with the first stage washable for the longest possible service life.
